Background

The Give Geography its Place Campaign begun after a post on the SLN Geography Forum by Val Vannet. Following this Dan Raven-Ellison made the now legendary post on the same forum titled “Getting the media to label Geography” and the GGIP campaign was born, co-founded by Dan and David Rayner on the 21st May 2006.

The campaign has gone from strength to strength, here are some of the achievements of GGIP in 2006.

  1. Nearly 2000 people signed the petition of support and this will continue to grow in 2007
  2. E-mails and supportive comments came from over 30 countries around the world
  3. GGiP coverage in local, national and international broadcast and print media
  4. A letter of warning was sent to the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport signed by over 100 leading Geographers from more than 50 different UK universities and educational organisations
  5. Public support from the Geographical Association, the Field Studies Council, politicians and tens of famous geographers
  6. 50,000 participants in the transatlantic Geography Cup with coverage on the BBC, within the Guardian and the Reuters news agency
  7. A Geography team winning the competition to edit the listener's edition of the BBC Radio 4 New Years Day Today programme
  8. A five by fifty metre aerial sign, one hundred GGiP t-shirts (and more to come), online videos and many more smaller 'big' things…
  9. Strength by numbers, debate and a greater sense of pride for many Geographers

In 2007 the GGIP campaign further developed:

  1. The creation of the GGIP online shop offering a range of GGIP merchandise
  2. The 2007 GA Conference was a great success for the GGIP
  3. Noel Jenkins @ Juicy Geography came across Studiobenben offering geographical postcards for students to take away when visiting another country. The campaign raised $46 for GGIP and The Darfur Wall. (more info here)
  4. BBC actually used the word Geographers! (see here)
  5. The GGIP online form was setup to encourage debate and empower supporters
  6. The GGIP super scheme was launched to support Primary School teaching of Geography (should be ready early 2008)
  7. GGIP in bookshops, a very successful sub campaign highlighting the lack of "geography" sections in many bookshops.
  8. The GGIP on Radio 6, with Jo Norcup promoting Geography
  9. The Hand of Geog was born and was seen on TV by millions at Live Earth
  10. The GGIP campaigned for Geography to be in the title of the BBC's new planet documentary
  11. The "G team" found the G Spot at Glastonbury
  12. Ken Livingstone was the latest high profile supporter of the GGIP campaign
  13. The birth of Guerrilla Geography will surly be a huge hit with geographers in 2008
  14. The launch of the "Our World Film Festival" again another key theme for 2008

Good luck in 2008 Geographers!
The Future

In 200 focus on those positive aspects which will help to ensure a secure future and a higher profile in the media by:

  • improving communication within and between all Geographers
  • actively promoting Geographical ideas and expertise to each other and the media.

Geography is already providing a pivotal role in all our lives – we need to make sure that more people understand and recognise this in 2008.
